Short answer: the best hot tub cover lifter is the one that fits the space around your spa, so measure before you shop. If your spa sits within a foot of a wall, fence or gazebo post, the Cover Valet is the strongest pick: it needs only 6-8 inches of rear clearance and has dual gas shocks. If you don’t want screws in your cabinet, the Cover Rock-It (square spas) or the Cover Caddy (any shape, including round) mount under the spa instead.

Most cover lifter lists rank products by ratings. That skips the question that actually decides whether a lifter works on your patio: where does the folded cover go, and is there room for it? Every model below lists a rear clearance and a side clearance on its manufacturer page or Amazon listing, and those two numbers knock out half the options for most people before price even comes up.
How we chose
We did not install these lifters ourselves. We compared the clearance, mounting, spa height and cover size specs published by the manufacturers (Cover Valet and Leisure Concepts) and on the Amazon listings, then read the Amazon review summaries for each model to find the complaints that repeat. Ratings are quoted with their count and the month we checked them (October 2026). Prices change too often to print, so each pick links to the current Amazon listing.

Rear clearance is the open space you need behind the spa (on the side where the cover stows). Side clearance is the gap the arms or brackets need on the left and right. Specs are from the sources listed at the end of this article.
1. Cover Valet: best when the spa is close to a wall
The Cover Valet bolts to the upper cabinet (or to the deck for recessed spas) and holds the folded cover upright behind the tub. Cover Valet’s own spec sheet lists 6-8 inches of rear clearance and 2.5 inches on the sides, which is the smallest footprint among the mounted lifters here. Two gas shocks take most of the cover’s weight, and a locking shock keeps it from dropping while you’re getting in. Cover Valet sells two sizes: the CV250 for covers up to 91 inches and the CV400 for covers up to 104 inches.
Good for: spas against a house wall, inside a gazebo, inground spas (Cover Valet lists it as compatible) and swim spas. The upright cover also works as a privacy screen on that side.
Skip it if: your spa is round or octagonal (it’s made for square and rectangular covers), or you’d rather keep the view open behind the tub.
- Pro: smallest rear clearance of any lifter in this list (6-8 in)
- Pro: dual gas-shock assist plus a safety lock
- Pro: cabinet or deck mount; listed as inground and swim spa compatible
- Pro: 5-year limited warranty on the lifter (1 year on shocks), per Cover Valet
- Con: spas with corner radii over 12 in need a separately sold 40 in XL side bracket
- Con: the CV250 Amazon listing has only 46 ratings (3.7/5), and the review summary is mixed on sturdiness
- Con: the cover stands tall and blocks the view on the stow side

2. Leisure Concepts CoverMate III: tight-space alternative with hydraulic lift
Leisure Concepts built the CoverMate III for the same problem: it needs 6 inches behind the spa and 5 inches on each side. It uses powder-coated aluminum tubing with composite brackets, and the brackets have covers that hide the mounting hardware. A TowelMate hanger for three towels comes in the box. For spas over 8 feet, or corners with a radius over 12 inches, Leisure Concepts offers extended arms and brackets.
Good for: the same tight installs as the Cover Valet, if you prefer the cleaner bracket look or your dealer stocks Leisure Concepts parts.
Skip it if: you want plenty of owner feedback before buying. The Amazon listing had just 4 ratings when we checked, which is too few to say anything about long-term durability.
- Pro: 6 in rear clearance
- Pro: hidden mounting hardware and composite brackets
- Pro: optional DeckMount bracket and extensions for larger spas
- Con: needs 5 in on each side, twice the Cover Valet’s 2.5 in
- Con: very little Amazon review data (4 ratings)

3. Leisure Concepts CoverMate I: the common pivot-bar design
The CoverMate I is the classic pivot-bar lifter: you fold the cover in half onto a crossbar, then pivot the bar so the cover swings off the back of the spa. Leisure Concepts lists 10-15 inches of rear clearance and 5 inches per side. It’s available with brand-specific brackets for some spa makes, which helps if your cabinet has an unusual profile.
Good for: spas with at least a foot of open space behind them and owners who want a proven, simple design with a decent number of reviews (4.4/5 from 132 Amazon ratings).
Skip it if: your cover is heavy or waterlogged. Owner reviews note the lack of a pneumatic shock assist, and the manufacturer’s spec list doesn’t mention one.
- Pro: well-rated with a meaningful number of reviews
- Pro: specialty brackets for certain spa brands
- Pro: TowelMate towel hanger included
- Con: no lift assist, so you push the cover’s full weight through the pivot
- Con: some owners report the rubber parts deteriorating over time

4. REGMICS Pivot Top Mount: the third-party pivot-bar option
REGMICS sells a pivot-bar lifter with the same layout as the CoverMate I: double powder-coated aluminum tubing, a three-hook towel rack and a lift-and-lock design. The listing says it fits spas up to 96 inches with corner radii up to 12 inches, needs 10-15 inches behind the spa and 5 inches on each side, and is not suitable for round tubs. It has 4.5/5 from 207 Amazon ratings, the best average among the cabinet-mount lifters here.
One detail to check before you order: the same listing also advises keeping more than 21 inches between the spa and the wall. That’s a bigger number than the 10-15 inch spec, so if your space is between those two figures, assume you need the larger one.
Good for: square or rectangular spas up to 96 inches with open space behind them.
Skip it if: your spa is round, has large rounded corners, or sits less than about 2 feet from a wall.
- Pro: highest average rating among the mounted lifters (4.5/5, 207 ratings)
- Pro: all-aluminum tubing, towel rack included
- Con: two different clearance figures on the listing (10-15 in vs more than 21 in)
- Con: the review summary is mixed on stability
- Con: no lift assist on the standard version (a separate hydraulic version is listed)

5. Cover Rock-It: no drilling, open view, most reviewed
The Cover Rock-It doesn’t screw into the spa at all. Two 8.75 x 8.75 inch plates slide under the spa, and the weight of the filled tub holds them in place. When you open it, the cover folds down beside the spa instead of standing up behind it, so the view stays open. Cover Valet lists 18 inches of rear clearance, 3.5 inches of side clearance, covers up to 100 inches, and spa heights of 30-44 inches.
Good for: owners who don’t want holes in their cabinet (some spa warranties and some rotomolded cabinets make drilling a bad idea) and anyone who wants the cover stowed low.
Skip it if: your spa sits on dirt or gravel, is a swim spa, or is taller than 44 inches. Also check the install step first: the Amazon listing warns that, depending on the setup, the spa may need to be emptied and lifted to get the plates underneath.
- Pro: 4.4/5 from 1,488 Amazon ratings, by far the largest sample here
- Pro: no screws into the cabinet
- Pro: cover stores low beside the spa
- Con: no shock assist
- Con: durability is the most common complaint in the review summary, including bars bending within a year
- Con: may require draining and lifting the spa to install

6. Cover Caddy: best for round, octagonal and odd-shaped spas
The Cover Caddy is the only lifter here that Cover Valet rates for all cover shapes, including round and octagonal spas and spas with cut or large-radius corners. Like the Rock-It, it mounts on a base plate under the spa, so there’s no drilling. A gas spring helps with the lift, and the cover ends up low and mostly out of sight. The catch is space: it needs 36 inches behind the spa (it needs no side clearance at all). It handles covers up to 120 inches on spas 30-41 inches tall, and an optional kit extends that to swim spas up to 55 inches tall with at least 40 inches of rear clearance.
Good for: round and octagonal spas, large covers, and yards with plenty of room on one side.
Skip it if: you have less than 3 feet behind the spa, or the base plate can’t sit flat and fully supported on concrete, asphalt or decking.
- Pro: works with every cover shape, up to 120 in
- Pro: gas spring assist, no drilling
- Pro: 4.3/5 from 301 Amazon ratings; owners mention it stays put in wind
- Con: 36 in of rear clearance, the most of any lifter here
- Con: mixed durability feedback in the review summary
- Con: may require draining the spa to install, per Cover Valet

How to pick a cover lifter in four measurements
Before you compare ratings, take a tape measure outside and write down four numbers. They narrow the list faster than anything else.
- Space behind the spa on the side where you want the cover to go. Under 10 in: only the Cover Valet or CoverMate III will fit. 10-17 in: add the CoverMate I and, if you have over 21 in, the REGMICS. 18 in or more: the Rock-It becomes an option. 36 in or more: the Cover Caddy fits.
- Space on the left and right. Pivot-bar lifters need about 5 in per side. The Cover Valet needs 2.5 in, the Rock-It 3.5 in and the Caddy none.
- Spa height from the ground to the top lip. The undermount lifters have limits (Rock-It 30-44 in, Caddy 30-41 in). Cabinet-mounted lifters list no height limit.
- Cover size and shape. Measure the longest side and the corner radius. Round, octagonal or large-radius corners point you to the Cover Caddy, or to extension brackets for the Cover Valet and CoverMate.
Then decide on two preferences. If you can’t or won’t drill into the cabinet, you’re choosing between the Rock-It and the Caddy, and both want a hard, level surface under the spa rather than gravel. If your cover is heavy (thick covers in cold climates often are, and they gain weight as the foam absorbs water), favor a model with gas shocks or a gas spring: the Cover Valet, CoverMate III or Cover Caddy.
A lifter also protects the cover itself, because it stops you dragging the cover over the edge or dropping it on the ground. If you’re putting together other gear for the tub, our list of hot tub accessories that make life easier covers the rest.
Do inflatable hot tubs need a cover lifter?
No. The lifters above mount to a rigid cabinet or rely on the weight of a hard-shell spa sitting on their plates. Inflatable tubs use light covers you remove by hand, and the cabinet-mount models can’t attach to soft walls. If that’s your setup, see our 2-person inflatable hot tub comparison instead.
FAQ
How much clearance do I need behind my hot tub for a cover lifter?
It depends on the design. Upright cabinet-mount lifters like the Cover Valet need 6-8 in, pivot-bar lifters like the CoverMate I need 10-15 in, the Cover Rock-It needs 18 in and the Cover Caddy needs 36 in. Check the specific model’s spec sheet before ordering.
Can I install a hot tub cover lifter without drilling?
Yes, with an undermount model. The Cover Rock-It and Cover Caddy sit on plates under the spa that are held down by its weight. Both may require draining the spa to slide the plates in, and Cover Valet says undermount lifters aren’t ideal on dirt or gravel.
What is the best cover lifter for a round hot tub?
The Cover Caddy is the only model in this comparison rated by its manufacturer for all cover shapes, including round and octagonal. The pivot-bar lifters (CoverMate I, REGMICS) and the Cover Valet are designed for square and rectangular covers.
Is a hydraulic cover lifter worth it?
It helps most with heavy covers and in cold climates where covers are thicker. Gas-assisted models here (Cover Valet, CoverMate III, Cover Caddy) take some of the cover’s weight during the lift. For a light cover on a smaller spa, a non-assisted pivot-bar lifter does the same job with fewer parts. If you live somewhere cold, our guide to hot tubs for cold climates covers covers and insulation too.
Do cover lifters work on swim spas or inground spas?
According to Cover Valet, the Cover Valet works on both swim spas and inground spas. The Cover Caddy works on swim spas up to 55 in tall with an optional kit. The Cover Rock-It works on neither.
